The Tsunami in India and Sri Lanka
The 2004 tsunami devastated much of Sri Lanka's coastline, and caused extensive damage in southern India. India's Nicobar Islands were among the worst hit by the disaster, losing an estimated twenty per cent of their population, compounded by a slow relief effort. While reconstruction on India's mainland has been relatively fast, rehabilitation in Sri Lanka has been hampered by the ongoing conflict between the government and the Tamil Tigers.
